Theory took of structure,Character,environment as "three elements" comply with May Fourth novel development, it influenced Chinese novel theory and its relationship with modern Chinese novel theory is unavoidable problem for the theorists which engage in researching modern novels. Under the requirement of times change, May Fourth writers and critics looked for a different literature presentation with traditional Chinese novel, and when it constructed itself theory system, they chose to learn "West". During May Fourth period, the development of novel theory couldn't live without reference, absorb and copy from West. Therefore, the popular "three elements" theory of novel method was widely accepted and great effected.The article took short novels of the period between late Qing Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty,May Fourth (main realistic novels) as mainly researching object, taking of structure,character,environment relation as main carrier, taking of "three elements" theory,narratology knowledge as main guidance, on the basis of text perusal and analysis, from three sides starting, plot center transition(from structure to intention transition),character sort and feature(from conception feature of flat figure to personality feature of round figure transition,environment from scenery to space-time transition (times feature of time and place feature of space), relating short novels development history to embody transition from tradition to modern, sourcing under time change, modern writers concerned "human".
