"Wen Qi", which is also called Spirit of Writing, is the essence of ancientChinese literature theories. Based on the theory of "Qi" philosophy, its developmenthistory is from the"Qi"of nature to the"Qi"of philosophy, and then to the"Qi"ofwriting. Origina lly, the"Qi"is a substa nce concept, then it potentia lly extended fromnatural "Qi" to the"Qi"of life, the"Qi"in the mea ning of article has gradua llybecome a philosophica l category, and later it entered into the aesthetic field. Thephilosophy of"Qi"theory began to sprout and develop in the pre-Qin period, mature din the Ming and Qing Dynasties . The philosophy of"Qi"with its unique way ofthinking had been infiltrating the core of Chinese culture and thinking. From beginning to mature,"Wen Qi"Theory can be divided into four stages. Atfirst, Mencius's doctrine of knowing words and keeping Qi is the beginning of spiritof writing. In the second stage, the system of"Wen Qi"has been basica lly establishedduring the period of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties. Cao Pi was the first toput forward"Wen Qi"Theory, and formally established the tradition of evaluatingarticles based on Qi. But he discussed Qi ma inly from congenital Qi, that is fromgenius. Liu Xie inherited and developed the Pi's point of view, systematica lly used theconcept to the literary theory. The third stage was the ancient paleographers'practiceand theory innovation from Tang to Ming Dynasties. Han Yu from the Tang Dynastyput forward his famous theories as follows:outcries provoked by injustice;imposing manner and suitable words. In the Song Dynasty, inherited from Menciusand Han Yu's theory of"Yang Qi", Su Zhe came up with the theory of"WaiYou". Thefourth stage was the literary theorists'perfection and complement after their creationand criticism practices in the Qing Dynasty. Tongcheng School in Qing Dynasty wasthe master of ancient Chinese literary theories. As one of the three pioneers of theTongcheng School, Liu Dakui's discussion about the dia lectical relationship betweenShen Qi, syllable and words was regarded as the most outsta nding contribution to the"Wen Qi"te heory. And later the successor of Tongcheng School developed thistheory that is according tones, syllables, etc. seeking Qi. Besides the"Yang Qi"and"Shen Qi", Liu Xiza i came up with the theory of smelting Qi. In the long process of development, the mea ning of "Wen Qi" has consta ntlybeen given to new content by successor. Currently, the interpreta tions of "Wen Qi"connotation in the academic field are ma inly included following theories: the worksma nner theory, the rhythm theory, the vital theory, the author's talent and charactertheory, the theory of author's talent and character, articles'style can reflect each other. The aesthetic pursuit of "Wen Qi" in traditiona l Chinese literature ma inly contained"Lively spirit and charm","The same Qi throughout the whole article", and the naturaland pure beauty. It can be said that the whole history of ancient Chinese literary theoryis the literary aesthetic history throughout the Qi.The active function of "Wen Qi" in the process of literary creation is ma inly forthe Qi of Xujing and determining to write books. Chuang Tzu was the representativeperson of Xujing Theory, and the theory attained more rich contents after thecontinuous complements by Lu Ji and Liu Xie. The Qi of Xujing can make the creatorsclear from cultivating aesthetic mentality and can easily choose writing conception. As a psychological proposition of creation, determining to write books wasformally started in Sima Qian in the Han Dynasty. Before and after with the echo, orcoming down in one continuous line of Han Yu's"Crying out against injustice"is thecreators'ma in driving force for the deep source of literary creation, and making theworks possess one kind of high-spirited "Sheng Qi". The reflection of "Wen Qi" onthe nature of literary works were the overa ll displa y shown in works'momentum, sense of beauty, grand momentum, style, spirit, structure, la yout, la nguage expression ,tone and other factors. The modern value of"Wen Qi"Theory is genera lly showed in the followingaspects. Based on this, people have established an objective and huma nistic unified method of literary criticism.
