In such a globalized world, with the ever increasing external exchanges between China and other countries, news, as the major medium for information transmission, plays an important role in modern society. News occupies the foreland of the society and represents the orientation of language development. Meanwhile, journalistic translation is now playing a more and more important role, so do its C-E translation. What's more, Chinese culture-specific expressions as one of the thorniest factors in cross-cultural communication, it also exerts its influence in news translation. The disposal of Chinese culture-specific expressions not only decides information spreading, but also relates to the international image of our country. TIME as one of the U.S. top two news magazines, has the largest circulation and readers in the world. Its language, especially, the reports about China, plays an important role in spreading Chinese culture and shaping Chinese international image. Therefore, it is of urgent necessity to know the present strategies adopted by TIME in handling Chinese culture-specific expressions in case its wrong disposal distorts our country's image, especially under the world-wide background of unfair report prevailing.Based on Manipulation Theory, this thesis discusses the current strategies adopted by TIME in translating Chinese culture-specific expressions. By analyzing the adopted strategy in handling Chinese culture-specific expressions by Time in 2009, this thesis aims to probe into the implicit factors determining its adoption, which would offer some help to the study of journalistic translation , even that of applied translation.This thesis is developed into five chapters.In Chapter one, it initiates with the introduction of current situation of journalistic translation of, the necessity and significance of researching into the issue, research objectives and thesis structure.Chapter two takes a review of previous study on journalistic translation, the application of Manipulation Theory in journalistic translation, thus to reveal the research results and limitations of previous study and further prove the necessity and significance of this study.Chapter three focuses on the theoretical foundation. The formation and development of the theory, main points of the theory, definitions of the three factors of the theory, namely ideology, poetics, and patronage and their respective influences on translations on translation, are introduced.Chapter four is the most important part of the thesis which introduces the research design, research questions, and research methodology and data collection. In this chapter, the author collects data through one linguistics forms aspect which reflects the cultural distance: Chinese cultural-specific expressions. Then the author probes into the implicit factors based on main principles of Manipulation Theory, in which manipulation factors are classified into three that is, ideology, poetics, and patronage.Chapter five is the conclusion of the thesis. The author summarizes the major findings of the thesis and points out the limitations of this research, showing that further study of cultural distance in other linguistic forms in journalistic translation of is necessary.
