In recent years, multilateral exchanges and cooperation between China and the world have become more frequent. To get effective communication and avoid conflicts and misunderstanding during exchange and cooperation becomes particularly important. In recent years,President Xi Jinping has made a series of important speeches in many diplomatic occasions. All the speeches from 2012 to 2014 are compiled in The Governance of China. In this book,a great number of Chinese specific expressions are used by President Xi to express a series of vital policies and political attitudes towards certain issues. While the governing philosophy and strategies are conveyed to the world, charm of Chinese language and culture are shown as well.In order to convey the essence of The Governance of China, translation of Chinese specific expressions in it becomes critical.Schema theory originates from cognitive psychology, and it is closely combined with linguistics. The schema theory claims that the new knowledge is to be possessed only by connecting and activating the existed one.At present, this theory has been developed in the field of translation. And the translation process of decoding and re-encoding can be fully explained by the process of activating relevant schema. To translate the meaning of source text accurately, relevant schema of both translator and target language readers need to be activated. This thesis takes English version of The Governance of China as example, and adopts analytical and inductive methods to analyze Chinese specific expressions in terms of language schema, form schema and content schema from the perspective of schema theory.Through comprehensive theoretical analysis and detailed case study, this thesis points out that the translator needs to decode the schema of the source language effectively and re-encode the target language accurately and reasonably in the process of translation.Only in this way can the cross cultural communication be achieved.Based on intensive analysis of a large number of examples, this thesis proposes some translation strategies of Chinese specific expressions to realize the translation aim. This thesis aims to apply the schema theory to the translation of Chinese specific expressions in political texts as well as tentatively seek a new theoretical perspective and new methods to translate Chinese specific expressions in political texts.
