With the implementation of the curriculum reform of basic education, the lack of traditional organizational form of teaching is more prominent. With the class-based teaching system, the students' initiative in learning English can not be played, so they have been in a position of passive learning. What's more, the principle of individualization in teaching can not be well reflected. Besides, the differences for students in learning English can not be well taken care of.However, the new curriculum in English secondary schools demands independent research, practical experience, cooperation as well as advocating the organic unity of the learning process by " doing" and "taking".It also requires the use of flexible curriculum learning resources to realize the diversification of learning styles, through a variety of ways to meet student diversity and individual development. Traditional teaching organizational forms and the concept of cooperation and autonomy advocated by new curriculum form a contradiction. This contradiction, to a certain extent, affects the English teaching reform. To change the way of learning depends on changes in teaching methods which are determined by teaching organizational forms. To achieve the proper combination of traditional learning and cooperative learning, it relies on the proper combination of innovative teaching organizational forms and traditional class teaching system. Therefore, innovative and flexible teaching organizational forms should be applied in order to meet the development of individual and diversified English learning.This paper focuses on Dalton Plan which is used in English teaching in junior secondary schools,to make up for the deficiency of the traditional class teaching system in the context of the new curriculum. It is supposed to urge the changes of the ways of teaching which surely leads to the changes of the ways of learning. Besides, it can naturally develop students'self-awareness of language learning and language skills of cooperation and communication and also arouse students'interest in learning English. All of these are the necessary capacity for students'future English learning.The paper is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces the problem, the aim, significance, characteristics and innovations of this research.Besides, it clarifies the ideas of teaching and learning advocated in the English curriculum criteria in a junior high school.The second chapter covers the deficiency of the present English teaching in junior high schools including the problems of the English teaching and the current organizational forms in junior high schools-the problems of traditional class-based teaching system.The third chapter describes the theory, main systems, history, principles, specific measures, theoretical basis, practical value and present innovations of Dalton Plan in the English teaching in junior high schools. Chapter IV expounds the application of Dalton Plan in English teaching in junior high school including staff structures, environmental establishments, measures to ensure the implementation of learning tasks, applied scopes of learning tasks, instructional designs, teaching cases and Powerpoints.Chapter V expatiates the experiment of using Dalton Plan in English teaching in junior high schools and demonstrates the process, methods and data collection of the experiment. Chapter VI makes specific analysis and comparisons of the results produced from the experimental class and control class and discuss the findings of the research. In addition, Chapter V makes surveys and analysis about the problem arising in the questionnaire as well as the typical problems.Chapter VII is the conclusion of the paper and future research suggestions. First of all, it is thought Dalton Plan can arouse students'interest in learning English, reflect the democracy of English learning, and take individual differences into account in learning English as well. Second, Dalton Plan is conducive to supporting expansion of English vocabulary and improving amount of reading. Meanwhile, further research is suggested. First, do further methodology research on Dalton Plan.Second, the application of Dalton Plan in English teaching in junior high school needs to be further studied. |
