Doctoral education is the highest level of academic education in china. Doctoral education is the main measure of the development degree of national higher education as well as the national culture and science. In this study, the author selected Research University, H University, 2008 top 10 postgraduates with excellent academic achievement in humanities and social sciences. Depth interview was mainly used to get the research data. The factors which influence the academic degree of humanities and social sciences doctoral students were studied from the prospective of students. Began in July 2008, the interview was conducted from the aspects of the motivation of pursuing PhD degree, publication of papers, impact of tutors, academic environment, curriculum, and achievement attribution, etc. Generic analysis was adopted to encode and analyze the investigation data, to extract the core point of view.Shown in the analysis, in the aspect of external factors, the importance of candidates'quality is mentioned enough neither by tutors nor students, and school years and curriculum is not considered as one important factor to the students'academic achievement as well. The impact of tutors (such as their own quality, teaching attitude, guiding ways, reputation, etc.), employment pressure, academic exchanges (including exchanges among students themselves, between tutors and the students, and also exchanges with the "leading figures" of the subject in academic conferences), are the key factors to the their academic achievement. In the aspect of internal factors, few, except interest and effort, are discussed. From the interview data of H University 2008 top 10 postgraduates with excellent academic achievement in humanities and social sciences, Mostly the academic development is attributed to the external factors, instead of the internal ones. This attribution tendency reflects one common characteristic of successors, that is, when failing, seek the cause in oneself; when succeeding, attribute to others.
