Academician Yang Shuzi is a well-known scientist, educator, orator and poet. Since the mid-1990s, Yang put forward a series of point of view on cultural education for all-around development theoretically and practically, conducted fruitful practice of cultural education for all-around development in HUST, and have had a far-reaching impact on the activities of cultural quality education across the country. This research selected academician Yang Shuzi as study object, through text analysis, the survey interviews, non-participant observation and other methods to study Yang's thought of cultural education for all-around development, to explore the integration of science and humanity.Yang's thought of cultural education for all-around development main include four aspects. First, he expounded the basic status of humanistic education; second, he analysed the relationship between science and humanity; third, he put forward the thought of "green education"; fourth, he discussed the "poetic education" and the issue of fostering the national spirit.Yang's thought of cultural education for all-around development are full of distinctive individual characteristics. Its main features include a deep patriotism, a strong sense of humane care, a significant and distinctive ethnic characteristics and practice. Besides, his thought of cultural education for all-around development possesses a complete, accurate and appropriate logical system. He puts education ontology, the purpose of education, educational methodology, the basic model of educational practice together.The formation of Yang's thought of cultural education for all-around development dues to not only the background of the times, but also his distinctive individual factors. The background of the times includes: in macro, the development tendency of the world economy, science and technology, education; in mid, China's national conditions and educational status; in micro, the reform and practice of HUST's cultural education for all-around development. Individual factors include: diligent in thinking, the abilities to learn and the courage to practice.
