Vietnam Railway And Yunnan Modern Economy A Number Of Issues

The railroad locomotive was "the locomotive engine" of Industrial Revolution from Britain and European and American countries in the 18th century. It is never too excessive to evaluate on its appearance in western countries, its development and its influence on the industrialization of the society. However, because of the Colonial plunder, the railroad locomotive----apple of the Industrial Revolution, which was the greatest pride of western societies, was brought into Yunnan province in the early twentieth century, which is the most backward region in China then.Yunnan went into the forefront of China's modernization as its underground mineral resources were crazily plundered. With time went on and everything has changed, the Yunnan-Vietnam railroad, which has been still the only operating railroad as the production of colonization up to now, will soon welcome its centenary celebration. Looking back to the centenary vicissitudes of Yunnan and Vietnam, they were filled with blood and tears of national oppression and exploitation, and also contained with many thoughtful lessons of history. Putting it under the academic vision of Philosophy of Technology, Sociology of Technology and Modernization Theory of all nations in the world, many academic questions are worth to be researched.After more than 2 years research and reflection, on the basis of the collections and summaries of predecessors, through the theoretical study of Philosophy of Science and Technology, the following questions deserving discussions are concluded in the thesis:On one hand, as a tool for French imperialism invading Yunnan, whether the Yunnan-Vietnam railroad had changed or promoted the economy of Yunnan objectively? On the other hand, the railroad locomotive was actually a technology and greatly promoted the western process of modernization. When it appeared in the semi-colonial and semi-feudal Qing government, what kind of role would it play and how would people regard it? After continuous deep-thought and the instruction of the mentor, the conclusions are as follows:First, the Yunnan-Vietnam railroad has the technological characteristics and natural properties as a materialized technology. It had objectively changed the economy and promoted the development of industrialization of Yunnan as the colonizers'tool, and it was the first step for Yunnan to go into the modernization. Secondly, as the technology brought in by western colonizers, it had dual roles. we should accept the Yunnan-Vietnam railroad in an open mind and utilize it to reform our backward situation. Then we will grow strongly and become one of the powers.The original study of this question is Ma Ling-He's "Study of Railway Foreign Loans in late Qing early Min". The book mainly chooses the late Qing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic to study and discuss the public response of Modern China to railway foreign loans.And tries to reveal the evolutional process as well as the essential qualities The Yunnan-Vietnam railroad in Yunnan is also a product of late Qing dynasty. Then what did the people of Yunnan think of it and what is the influence? The thesis studied the questions from the view of philosophy of technology, and used some original archives and statistics as the evidences to prove. The thesis considered that the colonial products like the Yunnan-Vietnam railroad and the advanced western technology of that time have their historical uniqueness. If this period of history is resurveyed, we should regard it from the historical and developmental vision. The thesis studies the Yunnan-Vietnam railroad through the classification and the analysis of the sources, and also through the evaluations of some temporal scholars. The study of the Yunnan-Vietnam railroad was just one of the studies, so the thesis draws a conclusion by the studies of Egypt, China and India invaded by western powers, which are advanced technologies used by that western powers to invade other countries meanwhile the technologies they used had dual social functions to the countries they invaded----As the western powers invaded other countries by advanced technologies to obtain colossal economic interests and political goals, these technologies involuntarily and objectively stimulated and accelerated the process of modernization of the countries they invaded, which is the innovation in the thesis.In addition, the thesis is studied from new vision and combined with related History of Science and Technology, Technical Sociology, STS, History and so forth, to regard the colonial goods the western countries brought in. It gets rid of treating problems solely by history and economy, so as to rise a high degree of philosophy.
