With China's sustained economic growth, the microelectronic industry has been occupying an increasingly important position in the national economy. However, China's entry into the WTO and the prosperous growth of its private enterprises has intensified market competition within the entire microelectronic industry. To address the hardships commonly encountered by the domestic microelectronic industry and threats from competitors, it is necessary to conduct a detailed study on the external market environment and the actual conditions of each enterprise, and to employ scientific, reasonable and effective methods, to consistently adjust and formulate relevant diversity development strategies according to the features of each individual enterprise. These strategies must be controlled and evaluated during the operation of the enterprise so as to explore new profit-making opportunities in a constantly changing competitive market and to continuously expand its capabilities and enhance its core competitiveness. This is an issue which is faced and which must be solved by every electronic enterprise.This paper presents an analysis and research on the external and internal environment, the traditional and new markets for STM, a company that is typical of the microelectronic enterprises in China. Based on strategic management, strategic competition and strategic decision making theories, and employing market structural analysis, PEST analysis and SWOT analysis, it proposes some strategic plans for diversity development that are suitable for the company. This paper is divided into 5 parts.Chapter 1 is an introduction, which gives a brief overview of the background of this research and the domestic microelectronic market and industry. It introduces the related strategic theories and outlines the main contents and methodologies used in this paper.Chapter 2 focuses on the analysis of the structure of traditional microelectronic industry and market, from which the market difficulties faced by domestic microelectronic enterprises can be seen. It leads to the necessary analysis of related newly-emerged industries.
