Engineering Contracting is a popular pattern of project managing and execution in construction engineering industry in the world. Along with the China's Opening and world's Economic Globalization, some construction firms in China are practicing and implementing this project pattern.Firm A is a contracting firm developing with the improvement of economy and change of project implement pattern after China's opening to outside world. Its development course included two changes, of which , one is system and mechanism transferring from a governmental design unit to a market design firm, the other is transferring from a design firm to a engineering corporation performing on trial as a contractor for turn-key lump sum contract. In the earlier decades after its foundation, Firm A has carried out many project engineering design tasks in chemical industry, and in the course of transferring, it successfully expanded its trade scope to pharmaceutical, municipal works, paper making, power generation, then it gradually started to practice lump sum contracting construction projects and also won success in some third world country such as Burma, Indonesia etc. Firm A is attempting to build a leading international engineering corporation, for which, engineering design is carrier, contracting is business aim, project management and capital operation are two flying wings.This said power generation construction project is located in Cilacap, Mid-Java, Indonesia. It is a large-scale power generation construction project which consists of two power generator with unit capacity of 300MW, gross capacity of 600MW. It is built with total investment of 530 million US dollars. All work including engineering, procurement, construction, and test-run in the plant battery limit is lump sum contracted by firm A in turn-key contracting pattern within 30 months. This is the largest contracting project carried by firm A after its foundation, also the largest mechanical and electrical equipment exporting project in the history of Sichuan province where Firm A is located.This article is a project management case study of the said project, which consists of 5 chapters:Chapter 1 describes the changing course and trend of construction project implement patterns, the characteristic and advantages of construction contracting pattern, then analyzes the possibility and necessity of transferring from design firm to a contracting company in an example of Firm A.Chapter 2 describes and analyzes the project management basic theories of project life cycle and project composing factors, and then draws conclusions about some characteristics of a large-scale power generation project.Chapter 3 describes the ideas and methods of Firm A carrying need and project identifying, and carries a SWOT analysis and feasibility study of Firm A joining competition and implement of this project.Chapter 4 describes the project scope programming, progress planning, quality programming, cost planning, and manpower programming work, puts effort to analyze the special importance of all this programming work in the project programming phase.Chapter 5 describes the project controlling base and change work dealing method in the project implement phase, also analyzes the judging principle of project ending and the completion work of a project in the ending phase.This article is attempting to study and analyze the project management through some project management theories utilization and the said large-scale power generation station project case. It is expected to give some advice to Firm A for improving contracting project management in the future project, and also provide some reference for other design firm transferring to a contracting company.
