Japanese-American economic relations are one of the most important bilateral relationsamong international economic relations. After World WarⅡ,Japan, a defeated country inthe war, suffered destructive damage in economy, while America had already become theeconomic overlord in the world. After the cold war, in order to curb the expansion ofSoviet Union and the influence of communisln upon the western world and to protect itsglobal hegemony, America shifted its policy of "restricting, weakening, and blowing"toward Japanese econolny to "supporting and helping" Japanese econornic recovery, sothat it could maximize its economic interests as well as turning Japan into a powerful andreliable alliance and an anti-communisln and anti-SU fortress in the far east. However, itturns out that America finally made Japan a powerful COlnpetitor of it, a result causinggreater changes in their economic relations. Based upon the changing process of thebalance between Japanese and American economic power, this paper here divides theevolution of Post WWⅡJapanese-American economic relations into four periods foranalysis, namely, the subordinate period between 1945 and 1955 when Japan was highlydependent on America, the period in the 60s and the 70s when they were equal partners intheir respective rapid economic development, the period between the 70s and the mid 90swhich was one of conflicts and the period of current times with both competition andcooperation. From the angle of interdependence together with conflicts which is thecharacteristic of Japanese-American economic relations, this article divides it's evolutionprocess into three modes, namely, "hitchhike" interdependence, "get aboard"interdependence, and "conflicts involved" interdependence. This paper also analyzes themain causes of the evolution of their economic relations and points out the rule ofimbalance in capitalist political and economic development from the angle ofinternational environment, comparisons between these two countries' Asia-Pacificeconomic strategies and policies and the rapid rise of China. About the trend of Japanese-American economic relations, this paper comes to the following conclusion: in the cunentperiod when Japanese-American alliance exists, Japanese-American economic relationswill be further strengthened and at the same time, conflicts and divisions are sure tofollow. China's rise in the Asia-pacific region will make Japanese-American securityalliance further more strengthened, their conflicts be put in the subordinate position andthe development of Chinese economy be suppressed. In the last part, from the angle of themain aspects in influencing the economic development disparity between Japan and America and the comparisons between Japan-American economic conflicts andSino-American economic conflicts, the paper points out the importance of technologicalinnovation and industrial structure for the speeding of our countries' economicdevelopment, and puts forward counter-strategies for "settling trade problems by way ofdispute solving system of WTO".
