In the industry background of technology and demand for dual-core-driven, telecommunications service providers are facing different levels of opportunities and challenges, and how to improve firm performance and maintain a sustainable competitive advantage gives rise to our concern. Compared with product competition and technology competition, business model has the features of more integrated and comprehensive. What's the real meaning of business model and whether business model design affects the firm performance has become an important issue. And from the path of theoretical study, it can be found that the researches in strategic management and organization design have gradually shifted from the internal model to the external trade model. Therefore, this paper focuses on the design of an organization's set of boundary-spanning transactions, which is business model design, and asks how business model design affects the performance of the telecommunications service providers. Furthermore, the development of telecommunications industry, business evolution, changes in demand and other factors also pose an urgent need for the change and innovation of business model for telecommunications service providers, and then telecommunications service providers need to focus on their business model design, creating and maintaining the characteristics of design theme, finally to improve firm performance. Thus, this research theme is extremely critical and of practical and theoretical importance. What's the main research innovation is that building a conceptual model of business model design and firm performance, and making an empirical analysis of their relationship on telecommunications service providers. Firstly, we refined the business model concept and measurement. In the previous studies, some scholars have concerned about the trade design as the new research content on organizational structure, in the basis of which, this paper applies the business models design further to develop this concept, to make it operational and measurable. In this paper, business model refers to the business transaction management and arrangements with external partners or participants in a certain operating environment, and it is a series of holistic and structural design or arrangement that emphasizes the transaction relationship, aimed at value creation and acquisition for the focal firm and external stakeholders. Secondly, we focus on the telecommunications service providers. By extending and integrating theoretical perspectives on the theory of transaction cost and the innovation, on the basis of literature review and theoretical analysis, we propose hypotheses about the impact of efficiency-centered and novelty-centered business model design on the firm performance, even the financial performance and non-financial performance. Thirdly, in the empirical research, we use the software of SPSS16.0 to make the reliability and validity analysis on the survey data, and also the software of Lisrel8.80 to test the hypotheses. The empirical results show that the novelty-centered business model design doesn't matter to the performance of telecommunications service providers, and the same results with the financial performance and non-financial performance. However, the efficiency-centered business model design matters to the performance of telecommunications service providers and even the same results with the financial performance and non-financial performance, and also this positive relationship is statistically significant. Additionally, the impact of the efficiency-centered business model design on the non-financial performance is stronger than the financial performance. All of these have tested and verified the effectiveness of business model design primarily, and the findings help to highlight the key role of business model design in firm performance, which has important significance of enriching and improving the business model theory and guiding the practice of telecommunications service providers.
