Background:It has been proved by basic and clinical trials that there are differences in sensitivity of normal tissue and malignant tumor towards ardent fever. This difference provides help for cancer treatment. Based on this one principle Microwave hyperthermia has been an important way of cancer treatment. Integrated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, microwave hyperthermia can relieve pain and improve quality of life. Elemene injection, which is abstracted from the rhizome of radix curcumae, is widely used in the treatment of cancer in recent years. Elemene injection could kill a variety of tumor cells, improve immunoregulation and induce apoptosis with no significant bone marrow suppression and liver and kidney dysfunction. It has obvious advantages in improving quality of life and prolonging the survival time.In view of above-mentioned reasons, the treatment for cancer with elemene injection and microwave hyperthermia is workable in theory. By a prospective clinical controlled study and a multidimensional analysis of patients'quality of life, we proved the effect of treatment with elemene injection and microwave hyperthermia on improving patients' quality of life.Object:In this subject we used elemene injection and microwave hyperthermia to treat gastrointestinal cancer and put particular emphasis on the effect of improving patients' symptoms and quality of life. The subject can provide the clinical evidence of advantage of improving patients'quality of life by integrating traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for-cancer.Methods:By clinical research randomized method,we used QLQ-C30 Table, NRS Pain Scores and the Indexes of detecting T cell subgroup and HA as outcome measures. The research data were based on 60 patients with gastrointestinal cancer in the haematology of Dongzhimen Hospital affiliated to Beijing University of Chinese Medcine from Feb.2010 to Feb.2011.60 patients were randomly divided into normal control group (treated by microwave hyperthermia) and test group (treated by elemene injection and microwave hyperthermia). There were 30 patients in each group and they were treated for 15 days as a cycle. The outcome index were measured in the 1st,8th and 15th days. SPSS13.0 was used for data analysis. T test was used to compare the measurement data between groups, while homogeneity test of variance for comparison within groups. P<0.05 means that there were significances in statistics. The changes after treatment was tested byχ2 test and non-parameter test. The effectiveness was analyzed by variance analysis and Wilcoxon rank test.Results:①The test group.Comparing the 1st day with the 8th day, the score points of quality of life was declined in the field of pain symptoms and this was considered statistical significant (P<0.05); Comparing the 1st day with the 15th day, the score points of quality of life went up in the fields of physical function, cognitive function and global quality of life, while went down in the fields of pain, fatigue and loss of appetite. This was considered statistical significant (P<0.05). The control group:Comparing the 1st day with the 15th day, the score points of quality of life went up in the field of global quality of life, while went down in the fields of pain and loss of appetite. This was considered statistical significant (P<0.05).②Comparing the test group with the control group:In the 8th day, the decline of the score points of quality of life in the field of pain was better than that of the control group. In the 15th day, the score points of quality of life in the fields of physical function, cognitive function, pain and fatigue was better than that of the control group. These were considered statistical significant (P<0.05).③The NRS Pain Scores of the test group was better than that of the control group and this was considered statistical significant (P<0.05).④Comparing the test group with the control group on the change of immunologic function of T cell, the result was not statistically significant (P>0.05).⑤Comparing the test group with the control group on the coagulation index FIB/D dimers, the result was not statistically significant (P>0.05).Conclusion:The treatment with elemene injection and microwave hyperthermia for gastrointestinal cancer was proved effective, hypotoxic and safe. The treatment, which can improve patients'quality of life remarkably, especially in treating cancerous pain, is worthy to be widely used in clinical practice.
