A Follow-up Study of Patients with Vascular Dementia after Treating with Compound Salvia Tablet for 24 weeksObjective:To do a follow-up study of patients with Vascular Dementia after treating with Compound Salvia Tablet for 24 weeks. Methods:It's a follow-up study of patients from a 24-week, block random, double blinded and placebo controlled clinical research. Chose 48 patients aged 45 to 80 with mild-to-moderate VaD according to National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke-Association Internationale pour la Recherche et l'Enseignement en Neurosciences (NINDS-AIREN) and syndrome of static blood obstructing brain according to Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome differentiation. They were randomly assigned to two groups, including 24 cases in the trial group and 24 cases in the control group. The patients in the trial group were given the Compound Salvia Tablet, while those in the control group were given placebo. All patients of the two groups were treated for 24 weeks, then stopped the treatment and followed up for another 12 weeks. The outcome measures included Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive (ADAS-Cog), the Scale for the Differentiation of Syndromes of Vascular Dementia (SDSVD), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Ability of Daily Living (ADL)Results:(1) At week 36, compared to the baseline, mean ADAS-Cog changes in the trial group were 0.68±2.92 (Mean±Standard Deviation, the same below) versus 4.11±5.69 for the control group (P=0.001); Mean SDSVD changes in the trial group were-3.33±2.88 versus 1.22±4.46 for the control group (P=0.000); Mean MMSE changes in the trial group were 0.71±1.16 versus-0.35±3.29 for the control group (P=0.034); Mean ADL changes in the trial group were 0.54±1.32 versus 0.96±4.27 the control group (P=0.205). (2) At week 36, compared to the results of week 24, mean ADAS-Cog changes in the trial group were 1.71±1.97 versus 1.32±2.02 for the control group (P=0.393); Mean SDSVD changes in the trial group were 0.75±1.94 versus 0.87±2.67 for the control group (P=0.720); Mean MMSE changes in the trial group were-0.08±1.10 versus 0.17±1.07 for the control group (P=0.328); Mean ADL changes in the trial group were 0.58±1.59 versus-0.17±2.46 the control group (P=0.215)Conclusion:From the 12-week follow-up study, we found that the syndrome of static blood obstructing brain of patients with mild-to-moderate VaD after treating with Compound Salvia Tablet for 24 weeks were significantly improved, and the cognitive were also improved compared to those without treatment. It provided some clinical evidence for the method of activating blood and dissolving stasis to treat VaD with the syndrome of static blood obstructing brain, and its efficiency requires further study to confirm.
