Objective To study the effects of flunarizine on the expressions of Type I II transforming growth factor βreceptor mRNAs (TβRI,IImRNAs) in brain tissue following cerebral ischemia in gerbils. Methods A cerebral ischemia-reperfusion model in gerbils was established by clamping both common carotid. One group of gerbils were fed with flunarizine before experiment. The expressions of T β RI, II mRNAs in brain tissue were detected by in situ hybridization(ISH) at the 6th hour . lst. 3rd and 7th day after ischemic reperfusion (IR) .Results ISH revealed that positive signals of Tβ RI II mRNAs were mainly present in cortical neurons and gliacytes of all groups ,and there was no difference between normal and sham operation group (P> 0.05). In cerebral ischemia group, the expression of T β RI II mRNAs was increased at the 6th hour. 1st and 3rd day. And at the 7th day, T β RI mRNAs expression still increases, while T βRII mRNAs expression obviously decreases (P<0.01). Compared with cerebral ischemia group, in flunarizine treatment group , T β RI,II mRNAs expression was increased at the 6th hour> 1st and 3rd day ,but without statistcial significance(.P>0.05); At the 7th day, T β RI mRNAs expression was decreased (P<0.01), and T βRII mRNAs expression was increased (P< 0.01).Conclusions Flunarizine can militate the ratio of T β RI mRNAsexpression to T P RII mRNAs expression, which may be advantageous to the signal transduction of TGF & and may protected brain tissue against injury caused by cerebral ischimic reperfusion .
