Propolis, or bee glue, is a brownish resinous material collected by honeybees from leaf buds and cracks in the bark of various plants like birch, poplar, pine, alder, willow and palm. The color of propolis varies with the source and collecting time. Propolis has been used as a folk medicin in many countries and has widely biological properties such as anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiinflammatory and antibiotic. Diabetic mellitus is a common incretion disease, caused by absolutely or relatively absence of insulin so that maintain a high blood glucose level. In this paper, the effect of propolis solutions extracted by ethanol (EEP) and water (WSP) on diabetic mellitus SD rats was studied, including the effect of propolis on the metabolize of sugar, lipid and protein in diabetic mellitus bodies; the effect to renal protect by observing the renal histopathology slice; the effect to intaking, drinking and urine of diabetic mellitus SD rats by metabolize experiments; the effect to blood glucose level in normal mice and other biochemistry indexes, besides these, the mechanism of propolis on diabetic mellitus (DM) were deduced. From two experiments, the results were as follows:1. EEP and WSP could control blood glucose level in a period.2. EEP and WSP could modulate the metabolize of lipid in DM, decreased the level of TC, TG, LDL-C, VLDL-C and increased the level of HDL-C.3. EEP and WSP could modulate metabolize of protein in DM, increased the level of TP and ALB to decrease the consumement of protein.4. EEP and WSP could protect the kidney and decreased the level of CREA, BUN, UA and UREA.5. EEP and WSP had good activity of scavening free radical to increase the level of SOD and decrease the level of MDA in DM.6. EEP and WSP had no significant effects to the quantity of intaking, drinking and urine, but limited intaking was benefit to cure DM.7. EEP and WSP had no significant effects to blood glucose level in normal mice, which explained that propolis couldn't inhibit the increase of blood glucose after intaking.8. EEP and WSP had good activity to decrease the level of blood glucose and modulate metabolize in DM, but they had no dose-dependent effect.9. EEP and WSP was non-toxicity material tested by acute toxicity experiment, and they had no bad effect on normal body.Although a lot of experiments had been done to study the effect of propolis to DM, there still existed a series of questions needed to study further. From this study, we could conclude that propolis had a good effect to DM, which provide a basis for exploring propolis as a kind of drug or a healthy food widely.
