Objective To study the therapeutic effects and mechanism of drynaria on osteoporotic ovariectomized (OVX) rats models. Methods 40 Wistar female rats about 3 months were randomly divided into 5 groups,8 in each: normal group(shamed operations group),ovariectomized group, nilestriol group,water pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group,ethanol pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group.After 1 week of operation,the drugs were initiated separately on each rat, 12 weeks later,bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X ray absorptiometry and the weight was compared.moreover,Radioimmunoassay was used to analyse blood level of estradiol(E2),osteocalcin (BGP) of every group, and histomorphological features of bone and uterus of the rats were also observed. Results the weight was increased significantly in OVX rats as compared with normal group(P<0. 05). As compared with the OVX group, the weight in the nilestriol group, water pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group,ethanol pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group were decreased (P<0. 05). The BMD of OVX group was significantly lower than that in the normal group, water pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group and ethanol pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group (P<0.05). On the contrary, The BMD of water pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group and ethanol pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group haveno statistical difference as compared with normal group.the levels of E2 in the OVX group were lower than those in the other groups(P<0. 05),and the level of E2 in the ethanol pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group group was higher than the water pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group.the levels of BGP in the normal group, water pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group,ethanol pharmaceutical preparation of drynaria group were obviously increased as compared with the normal group (P<0. 05). Drynaria showed markedly improving effect on the bone and uterine morphological construction of rats. Conclusions the drynaria has the effect of estrogen,it can prevent and cure post-menopausal through stimulating the growth of osteoblast and improving the building of bone quantity.
