Objective Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) was officially named by Centers for Disease Controland Prevention (CDC) of the U.S government in 1988. The incidence of CFS rises year afteryear, which causes enormous economic losses. At present, there are no effective treatmentmethods because of its unclear etiology and pathogenesis. It belongs to the dominant diseasesof TCM. As a non-pharmacological therapy, with its good therapeutic effect and non-toxic andnon-side-effect characteristic, acupuncture and moxibustion has great predominance on treatingCFS. In recent years, many clinical reports illustrated that. Based on the clinical efficiency oftreating CFS by acupuncture and moxibustion, combined with the TCM classical theory --- livedominate smoothing and regulating the flow of qi and blood, the rat model was induced bycomplex stress factors to simulate the clinical manifestation of CFS, and then we chose therepresentative points to carry out the acupuncture experimental research. It is our purpose thatto discuss the possible way through which acupuncture has good effect in treating CFS. Methods Wistar rats (male, weight 160-180g) were randomly distributed to control group, modelgroups, EA si-guan points group and EA other points group. All groups except the control wereexposed to complex stressors for 21 days, and EA groups accepted electro-acupuncturetreatment at the same time. EA si-guan points group was punctured in bilateral Hegu(LI 4)andTaichong(Liv 3). EA other points group was punctured in Baihui (DU 20), Zusanli (ST 36)and Taichong (Liv 3). Evaluating the model according to the behavior changes of the rats.Examining the content of the monoamine neurotransmitters in different brain tissues of the ratswith electrochemical and high pressure liquid chromatography, and Examining the content ofthe IL-1β,IL-6 in serum with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method. Results 1. Compared with control group, the model rats appeared not only physical strengthdeclining, but also hypoactivity of explore new environment and spontaneous activity, which4 电'对肝郁型复合应激模型大鼠神经-免疫功能影响的研究indicated that the model rats were on the states of both physical and mental fatigue, same as theclinical manifestation of CFS patients. EA could improve the behavioral disorder and markedlyreverse the fatigue states of the model rats, especially the EA si-guan points group. 2. There were some metabolic disorders of central monoamine neurotransmitters in modelrats----decrease of the content of NE, DA, HVA, 5-HT and 5-HIAA in pallium; decrease of thecontent of NE, DA and HVA in hippocampus and DOPAC in hypothalamus, increase of thecontent of 5-HIAA in hypothalamus. EA could regulate metabolic disorder of monoamineneurotransmitters in central nervous system, and EA si-guan points group was more effectivethan EA other points group. 3. EA could decrease the levels of serum IL-1β and IL-6, which increased in model rats. Conclusion 1. CFS is closely related to emotional causes. The rat model induced by complex stressorswas succeeded in simulating the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of CFS of liverdepression type. 2. EA could markedly reverse the physical fatigue and the mental fatigue of the model rats, improves the fatigue state of the animals through psychosomatic regulation, and had thefunction of anti-fatigue and anti-stress. 3. EA could regulate the model rats' disorder of monoamine neurotransmitters in centralnervous system, such as NE, DA and 5-HT, and decrease the contents of serum IL-1β,IL-6which increased in model rats. That is one of the possible way through which EA improve thechronic fatigue state and cure CFS. 4. Compared with EA other points group, EA si-guan points group appeared moreeffective in regulating the chronic fatigue state of model rats, especially the mental fatiguestate.
