Objectives Coronary Heart Disease(CHD) is a chronic disease caused by multiple factors. It has become major cause of death for many years in the developed countries and the third cause of death in our country. The aim of the present study was to assess the association of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) concentration, psychosocial factors and risk of coronary heart disease and the significance of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in the pathogenesis of coronary heart diseasa, we observed the levels of sICAM-1, evaluated by forms on the behaviors of type A, life events in patients with CHD and in healthy controls. Methods Using a group design, we measured the levels of sICAM-1 using sandwich ELISA technique in 31 patients with CHD and 32 healthy subjects (control group). Meantime, TC, TG, LDL, HDL-c was measured. The relationship of type A behavior pattern (TABP), life events to risk of CHD incidence with the use of "Type A Behavior Pattern Questionaire", "Life Event Scale" respectively. "Type A Behavior Pattern Questionaire" was edited by professor zhang boyuan in 1983 and began to use in national contry in 1985, which consisted of 60 items: including 'TH", "CH", "L". "Life Event Scale" was the self-rating scale, comprised of 7 kind of the common life events. The data was handled and analysed with SPSS11.5 soft system. Results The proportion of type A behavior Pattern, type A behavior pattern and life events score were much higher than the controls (P<0.05, P<0.01,P﹤0.01). Patients suffering from CHD showed significant higher serum concentrations of sICAM-1, TC and TG than healthy controls (P<0.01,P﹤0.01,P﹤0.01). The serum sICAM-1 level revealed positive correlation with type A behavior pattern and life events score, TC, TG level (P﹤0.01,P﹤0.01,P﹤0.05,P﹤0.05).Type A behavior pattern positively correlated with life events and TG level(P﹤0.01) . Life events positively correlated with TC, TG, LDL level(P﹤0.05,P﹤0.05,P﹤0.05). Conclusions Type A behavior pattern, stressful life events psychological factors was followed by an increase in soluble ICAM-1 serum concentrations, which may contribute to the pathogenesis of CHD.
