Objective To investigate the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in renal tubular epithelial cell of diabetic rats and the renoprotective effect of valsartan(val) Methods Diabetic rats were induced by streptozotocin(STZ) . Rats were randomly divided into four groups:normal control group, diabete group, val(10mg/kg·d by gavage)treatment group 1 and val(20mg/kg·d by gavage)treatment group 2. ICAM-1expresion were measured by immunohistological staining at 4,8 weeks of experiment. In addition , the relation between ICAM-1and urinary albumin excretion Results 24-hour urinary albumin excretion rate(P<0.01) Kidney weight/boby weight(p<0.01) and creatinine clearance in the group 2 were significantry lower than diabetic untreated rats. By immunohistological staining, there are a few positive expression of ICAM-1 in renal tubular cells, which became stronger in the diabetic rats as compared with nomal control rats(p<0.01).the expressionof ICAM-1in renal tubular cells was positively correlated with urinary albumin ( r=0.979,p<0.01 ) . Valsartan decreasere markably the expression of ICAM-1 in the renal tubular cells compared to diabetic rats(p<0.01) Conclusion ICAM-1 may play a role in the lesions of renal tubular epithetial cell, while valsartan may possess an effect on the protection of diabetic nephropathy may through decreasing the expression of ICAM-1 in the renal tubular cell.
