Objective Left ventricular hypertrophy and abnormal left ventricular geometry are independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease events.Brain natriuretic peptide(BNP) is synthesized and secreted mainly from the left ventricle in humans. Serum BNP may reflect the structural abnormality of left ventricle in hypertensive patients. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between serum BNP levels and left ventricular remodeling in patients with essential hypertension (EH).Methods Serum BNP concentrations were measured with ELISA in 44 hypertensive patients and 20 healthy controls.Echocardiograms were performed in hypertensive patients to measure parameters of left ventricular structure and function.According to echocardiographic findings, hypertensive patients were divideded into two groups:28 patients with normal geometry and 16 patients with left ventricular remodeling. The serum BNP levels of three groups were compared and the relationships between serum BNP levels and echocardiographic parameters were assessed. Results Serum BNP levels in EH patients with left ventricular remodeling(3.07 + 1.36 ng/ml) were significantly higher than in EH patients withnormal geometry (1.83 + 0.61 ng/ml) or healthy controls (1.93 + 0.88 ng/ml)...
