Laws of diagnosis, treatment and administering herbal medicines in treating with joint pain of four limbs is discussed in this thesis by means of literature analysis of relevant items and formulas in Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases. Then combining this law and making further explorations into the relativities with rheumatic disease in Western medicine. In this research, syndrome of joint pain is divided into three aspects: affection by wind cold, kidney Yang deficiency and wind dampness. It sums up the law of administering herbal medicines as follows: (l)Relieving exterior disorder to correct pain, we can make good use of ephedra and cassia twig in this way. (2)Warming Yang and dispelling cold to relieve pain, processed aconite root can be used well. (3)If the pain is caused by wind wetness, dispersing stasis, warming and dredging the channels is the main method. So in TCM, it is not necessary to confront infect agent directly, the crux of treating disease rests in directing mainly at pathogenesis, giving full scope to powers of resistance or regulating functional state. Chinese medicine and western medicine are both engaged in studying joint pain. The identification and analysis of joint pain in classics fully demonstrate that, when combining clinically the differentiation of diseases in Western medicine and the differentiation of syndrome together in TCM, we should attach importance to the integrity of theory, treatment, formulas and herbal medicines.
