NUX PRINSEPIAE, the mature drupe of Prinsepia uniflora Batal. or Prinsepia uniflora Batal.var.serrata Rehd., has been used as medicament for the eyes in China.Fifteen compounds were separated from the the of Prinsepia uniflora Batal. by various chromatographic methods, such as silica gel, sephadex LH-20, PTLC and so on.On the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, fifteen compounds were identified as: balanophonin (1), ferulaldehyde (2), vanillic acid (3), protocatechuic acid (4), gallic acid (5), kaempferol (6), quercetin (7), ulasolic acid (8), stigmast-4-ene-3β,6β-diol (9), hop-22(29)-ene (10),1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy)-phenyl-1,2,3-propanetriol (11), N-acetyl-glutamic acid (12), succinic acid (13), β-sitosterol (14), β-sitosterol-β-glucoside (15). Among them, compound 1-14 were isolated from this genus for the first time.A review on benzofuran neolignans was summarized based on the related references.The experiments in vitro showed that the extracts of Prinsepia uniflora Batal. promoted neurite outgrowth in the presence of NGF(2ug/ml), enhanced the NGF-induced neurite outgrowth from PC12D cells.
