Objective: To adopt the single-blind, randomized and controlled design method to evaluate the clinical efficacy of treating the Yang-deficient-due-to-cold type osteoarthritis of the knee with umbilical moxibustion (CV8) complemented by the local electrical acupuncture (UM). And use the umbilical sham moxibustion complemented by the local electrical acupuncture (USM) as the control. Compare each group's pain scores, knee joint function assessment scores, inter-group pain score differentials, inter-group knee joint function assessment score differentials, inter-group pain outcome and inter-group overall outcome at pre-treatment, post-treatment and 1-month follow-up to observe the efficacy of treating the Yang-deficient-due-to-cold type osteoarthritis of the knee with umbilical moxibustion (CV8),so as to seek ways to improve the clinical efficacy of treating the Yang-deficient-due-to-cold type osteoarthritis of the knee. Methods: 1. A total of 60 patients, eligible for the inclusion standard, with the Yang-deficient-due-to-cold type osteoarthritis of the knee were randomized into 2 groups according to a table of random numbers (104 knees). 2. The treatment group had 30 patients (54 knees). The umbilical moxibustion (CV8) complemented by local electrical acupuncture over the acupoints of media & lateral Xiyan (EX-LE5), Yanglingquan (GB34), Yinlingquan (SP9), (Zusanli) (ST36), Liangqiu (ST34) and Ashi; For the control group, 30 patients (50 knees) were treated by the umbilical sham moxibustion complemented by local electrical acupuncture. The acupoints were the same as above. 3. The two groups were treated once daily on average. Ten sessions were counted one course of therapy. The therapeutic outcomes were compared after one course. Re-evaluation was conducted at one-month follow-up. 4. Observation criteria: The following 6 parameters were employed to evaluate the subjects at pre-treatment, post-treatment and one-month follow-up for three times.①Pain scores for each group;②Function evaluation scores for knees within each group;③Score difference between the two groups;④Score difference of function evaluation scores for knees;⑤Improved outcome for the chief presenting pains of the two groups;⑥Improved overall...
