Background: The present medical and nursing quality is faced with great changes. Nursing quality indicators are very important to the evaluation and development of the nursing quality in hospital. This research is to explore and develop the nusing quality indicators which are suitable for evaluating the present nursing quality in general hospital.Object: to explore the main content which the nursing quality indicators for general hospitals should cover nowadays.Method: A modified Delphi procedure was used, and the initial questionnaire was developed through literature review and semi-structured interview. A multidisciplinary panel of 54 experts from clinical management, hospital nursing quality management, health administration nursing departments was selected for the study.Results: After two rounds of Delphi procedure, the opinion of the experts appeared consistent. The response rate was 81.5% at first round and 86.4% for the second round. A indicator system which covered structure, process, outcome domain including three-grade indicators was obtained. The first grade included 5 items, the second grade included 17 items, and the third grade consisted of 57 itemsConclusion: The main content of the general hospital nursing quality indicator is obtained. The outcome of this preliminary study provided a basis for the futher study for concrete indicators.
