Objective:(1)To explore the EEG characteristic of obsessive—compulsive disorder(OCD) as compared to healthy controls by quantitative analyzing each frequency of EEG.. (2) To determine hemispherical lateralization and regional differences on the EEGs of patients with OCD. (3) To correlate EEG data with the obsessive and compulsive features of OCD.Method:EEGs (8-channel) were recorded from 19 unmediated patients with OCD but no depression and from 20 age-and-sex-matched control subjects by biofeedback device. The mean relative power in delta, theta, alpha and beta frequency bands was calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 11.5 for Microsoft Windows).Results:(1) Relative power spectra revealed increased delta- beta- and decreased alpha-relative power in the group of patients. (2)The analysis of lateralization suggested that delta and theta frequency of EEG had displayed left hemispherical lateralization at frontotemporal lobe, while right hemispherical lateralization of alpha at frontal lobe and beta at parietal and occipital lobe. (3)Correlation analyses showed significant negative correlations of the Y-BOCS sub-scores "obsessions" with delta- theta- relative power and positive correlations with beta relative, while positive correlations of the Y-BOCS sub-scores "compulsions" with delta percent power of frontal lobe.Conclusions:(1) The increment of delta relative power prompts dyactivation of frontal lobe. (2) The lateralization analysis suggests that the pathology of OCD maybe mainly on the left hemishere. (3) The opposite correlations of EEG data and clinical features, i.e. obsessions and compulsions, are suggestive of pathophysiological differences based on the presence of the respective cardinal symptoms of OCD.
