| In all classical texts of Traditional Chinese Medicine, there appears to be no mention or record of "Polycystic Ovary Syndrome"(PCOS).However, according to the established medical symptoms of PCOS,it can be seen to manifest itself according to TCM definitions of "Amenorrhea","Infertility/Failure to conceive","Irregular Menstruation",etc. This study aims to use the TCM concepts of "Invigorating the Kidney,Regulating the Liver,Strengthening the Spleen' as a basis of conducting a case observation in Singapore of employing only traditional Chinese medicine and herbs in the treatment of PCOS.A study group of 42 patients diagnosed by gynecologists as suffering from PCOS and not responding to conventional 'Western' medical treatment were chosen for this study(of which 38 patients had their first clinical diagnosis of PCOS;another 4 patients were relapse cases of PCOS.) The clinical trial lasted from 6 to 24 months. The results of the study showed that the treatment had no effect on 10 patients(23.81% of total),while 14 patients experienced pregnancy(33.33%),6 patients showed obvious improvement(14.29%),and 12 patients(28.57%) showed signs of improvement.Total favorable response of the study group to treatment was 76.19%.This study shows that the utilization of TCM achieved a certain degree of success in the treatment of PCOS. Additionally, the TCM treatment results in less side-effects of medication and is also a more economically viable means of medication for the patient. |
