Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) is a common spice and is often applied in clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Many textbooks on Chinese herbs classify Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) in the herbs that warm the interior. Its nature, flavor, action, preparation pattern for decoction etc. are all recorded. However, there is no clear distinction in its habitat, origin, action, application, method for decoction and administration, dosage range and dosage-effect relationship. Due to these facts, it is necessary to research on Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) and'Gui' family crude herbs to provide a practical instruct ion to apply this herb. The paper contains 3 sections.1. Records on Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) in herbal classics:the time of the earliest record of'Gui'family crude herbs and Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui), the origin of Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui), the method for decoction and administration, the dosage range, the dosage-effect relationship, the action and application of Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui).2. Study on Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) in herbal classics and medical books:statistics were made on the actions and indications of Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui). Analyze which is the effect of single herb and which are the synergetic effects. Analyze how to match with other herbs to get the synergetic effects. Analyze the mechanism between Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) and the herbs that are matched. Discuss the concept and pathogenesis of returning fire to its source. The dosage-effect relationship was compared. Statistics were made on frequency of decoction.3. discussion(1)The most frequent method for decocting Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) is to decoct it with other herbs together.(2) The mechanism of returning fire to its origin. This method is for failure of fire to return to its source. Balance of water and fire in the kidney should be kept, otherwise, this problem appears. Three main causes:fire flaming upward due to yang deficiency; fire due to yin deficiency failing to nourish yang; accumulation of cold in the interior to force fire out.(3)The effects of Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) are strengthening yang, warming the interior to dispel cold, expelling wind to dissipate cold, warming yang to promote qi flow, warming yang to promote blood circulation, regulating qi and blood and returning fire back to its origin. The regularity of matching with other herbs was found and thoughts on clinical application of ancient doctors were analyzed.(4)From the research, we found that the effects of single herb Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) are strengthening yang, warming the interior to dispel cold, expelling wind to dissipate cold, warming yang to promote qi flow, warming yang to promote blood circulation. The synergetic effects are:regulating qi and blood, returning fire to its source. Despite this, ancient doctors tend to use Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) together with other herbs.(5)Cortex Cinnamomi (Rou Gui) has many functions due to its property and characteristics. The tendency of this herb is stronger than its direct effects. Therefore, we have to grasp the property and apply this herb flexibly with other herbs.
