Currently, the theory of visual design for the purpose of communication and entertainment is incomplete. For the most part, audiences have inappropriately ignored the culture behind the meanings of visual images and their social impact by considering visual information as self-evident. This has resulted in the phenomenon of rampant copying of contemporary Western visual design by Chinese designers as the main reference for art works in China. However, some audiences are condemning rather than praising this phenomenon. One purpose of entertainment visual design is to alleviate social stress. With the changing times and the ease of communication, the cultural exchange between East and West has led to the loss of the original or traditional cultural meanings of many symbols, but has also led to an increase in the diversity of the meanings and functions of symbols. In this paper, the core issue to be explored is the role and the application of visual symbols in communication and entertainment. This paper analyzes visual design in graphic symbols for the purpose of communication and entertainment. Focusing on the effect of the visual information carrier-graphic symbols-the author demonstrates aspects of the original meanings, their historical developments, cultural exchanges and transmission methods, entertainment effects and social impacts, combined with multi-angle theories such as semiotics, psychology, design studies, and communication studies. Issues covered include:how to create the visual design of communication and entertainment, how to use graphic symbols to represent communication and entertainment, how to discover communication and entertainment elements in the visual language of symbols and dig out the potential functions of symbols, and finally, how the visual design of communication and entertainment can bring the audience from the psychological level of consensus to that of vision. The author discusses creative innovations, social impacts, future trends and values of graphic symbols through three views:the application and the development of visual design in graphic symbols for the purpose of communication and entertainment, the manner in which audiences recognize symbols and the various expressions of visual design. Additionally, the author analyzes the theoretical framework of graphic symbols through an academic prism. Graphic symbols are important, in that they enable visual design to transcend linguistic boundaries, thus facilitating cross-cultural understanding. Audiences can universally enjoy this visual language, which often stimulates emotional responses in ways that other media do not. This is, in essence, the purpose of graphic symbols in design: a meaningful response from the desired audience.
