Franz Perter Schubert and Hugo Wolf are both the representatives of German and Austrian art song of 19th century. The art songs they created symbolize the development and transition of German and Austrian art songs in 19th century. This article studies the art songs the two composers created from Goethe's poet, Nur wer die sehnsucht kennt. This article not only compares the two songs in the respects of times background, lyrics and melody, tunes, composition of songs, pianoforte accompaniment etc, but studies the styles of performances as to the two different songs with the same words so that the features of Schubert and Wolf's art songs can be stated. On the basis of classicalism creation techniques, Schubert's works integrated romantic musical features, full of idealism of subjective romanticism, perfect and beautiful. Modern music of early stage is shown in Wolf's works which aim to reproduce the poet in emotion, and pursue objective lyric. Subject to the difference and sameness between these two songs, differential ways of performance should be adopted accordingly.
