Since the official opening-up in 1843, Shanghai quickly emerged as commercial and cultural center of the South and attracted a large number of artists. They shared a common living environment and gradually formed interest convergence to meet the evolving market demands. Thus, the Shanghai Painting School appeared. The diverse and flexible mix is one of the main features of the School. However, the artistic feature of integration of Ren xiong, the pioneering artist is more representative and significant.Ren xiong, one of the pioneering artists of the School in Late Qing dynasty, combined the traditional Chinese painting and the folk art, mixed the Chinese and Western painting, created his own new painting method, and formed the integration characteristics. In this thesis, the author described Ren xiong's artistic feature of integration mainly from the following four aspects. In the first part, the author lists reasons for the formation of Ren xiong's painting and describes characteristics of other major painting school and their impacts on Ren xiong's drawing in the late Qing dynasty. The refined and implicit feature of Wu School, the bold feature of Zhejiang school, the simplicity of folk art and lifelike realism of Western painting brought deep influences in the form of language of Ren xiong's painting. Subsequently, Ren xiong absorbed much more widely and acquired deep drawing skills. In the second part, the author elaborates Ren xiong's painting language in the form of meticulous brushwork, freehand and woodblock prints, as well as Ren xiong's painting subjects different from ladies figures, religious figures, legendary figures, landscapes and flowers and birds. In the third part, the feature of "integration" of Ren xiong's painting language is described in detail. On the lines, Ren xiong took use of both ways of Qu Tie Pan Si and vigorous lines in drawing, combining different features of a plump lotus, compactness in Tang and Five dynasty and upright and bent lines of printmaking's in his works; in shape, he combined both deformation and exaggeration modeling language, which involved Chen hong shou's outstanding shape, exaggeration and summarized style in print makings and the vivid style in Yun shou ping's art works; in color, Ren xiong's paintings were not only quaint and elegant but also gorgeous and impressive, because he chose some features of colors in Chinese folk art and Western painting to use in traditional painting and formed the unique color appearance; in the composition, he absorbed two quite different ways: the full-scale and traditional balanced style to form his own flexible composition way and enrich means of expression in drawing. In the last part, the author states effects and inspiration. Ren xiong's comprehensive, innovative spirit and awareness of making full use of advantages from other schools set a good example for painting and calligraphy creation, also had an important effect on the formation of artistic style of Shanghai school. And Ren xiong's integration features in drawing has pointed out the direction of our modern art creation that it should be closely linked with our real life and only through explorations and expansions of eclectic fusion with the pace of the times, not can we fall behind. There are few studies on Ren xiong's art works nowadays. For the thesis, the author endeavored to collect their data and research the artistic language through the methods of analysis and comparison. On the basis, the author summarized the role, the impact and inspiration to following painters of Ren xiong's artistic feature of fusion.
