Known as the father of Japanese morden art, a famous art critic and educationist, Okakura Tenshin plays an extremely vital role as a guide in Japanese art history during the Meiji period. What is more, on account of the contribution in his advocacy and exploration of Asian values for the development of world culture, Okakura Tenshin's art theory acts as an important branch in the history of the Meiji period. Furthermore, in the process of modernization transformation, together with waves of system construction in various fields, Okakura Tenshin creates a historically distinctive mode for the promotion of contemporary Japanese art by way of such methods as "government office+high-level interaction", "publicity+publishing", "founding schools+ setting up societies" and "holding exhibitions+offering awards". His active advocacy and promotion of new Japanese art is a milestone in the system construction of contemporary Japanese art.The present study aims to chronologically trace every aspect of Okakura Tenshin's undertaking in the new Japanese art movement through a great deal of literature review, graphic analysis and a synthesis of his experience and the history of the new Japanese art movement. Throughout his life, Okakura Tenshin's role changes from a "lingering guide" to a "whole-hearted promoter" and to an "overseas wandering idealist". This study, in three stages, introduces his promotion mode for contemporary Japanese art and the distinctive features of each corresponding stage. |
