The "public space" is a forum for people to express their views freely and exchange opinions to one another on an equal footing. It tends to mould the public ways of thinking, behavior, and sentiments. In a subtle way, this "public space" also has an influence on the development of the "visual art". "Public space" in every era has its different physical and spiritual connotations, and it has been part of the human existence and development ever since the days of the primitive society. Regardless of whether it is the natural or social environment, once it has been subjected to human thoughts, manipulation, transformation, or modification, it is elevated to a new artistic stage, producing new visual effects and functions. The result is a "public space" closely linked to the human activities. This space is a reflection of the consciousness of human activities, and amongst its artistic forms, the mural art occupies an important position. From its time of birth, mural art has been closely related to the art of public space. The specific form of the mural art has ensured such close relationship. Over the long course of history, mural art has transformed its appearance and form, along with the transformation of the concept and functions of the public space art. With the development of the modern society, mural art has seen potentials for a variety of new opportunities.From the historical context, this paper discusses the interactions between public space art and mural art, and sorts out the development of the mural art within the public space art. The paper also bravely present the opinion on how mural art combine to the art of public space development and changes in the present and the future, comply with the requirements of the times, reflecting the new look of modern society, new technology and new sense of aesthetic.
