As a part of the public art, contemporary mural paintings is undergoing a unprecedented development in China. Due to its natural characteristic of publicity, mural paintings have been showing powerful affinity to the public in its long-term history of development, which ensures mural paintings to be easily evolved and to get new characteristics compatible with contemporary culture. Along with coming of the public culture, the public's request for expressing their rights in culture in public fields has been rised strongly and can be expressed in general art forms, including public mural paintings.Firstly, the history of Chinese contemporary mural paintings and the mural paintings in Beijing subway station system- were reviewed in this thesis. On the basis of these reviews, the current status of public mural paintings in city space in China was studied, then the relationship between mural paintings and public space was analyzed. Meanwhile, the similarities and differences between public mural paintings and commercial advertisement was discussed here to study their internal relationship, and then to explore feasible ways for the development of the contemporary mural paintings to meetthe public requirements and to accept more public information in mordern cultural environment.
