Tang And Song Poems On Paintings

The painting poetry is the wonder of ancient Chinese arts. It bridges poetry and picture. The prosperity of Chinese poetry bloomed in Tang and Song dynasties, as well as the painting. Therefore, the painting poetry developed at that period of time. This kind of art has its unique style and aesthetic functions, which gives great effects on the later development of the theories and ideology in poetry and picture.The thesis intends to find out the artistic conception of the painting poetry in Tang and Song dynasties from four perspectives:its historical cultural sources, its aesthetic functions, its effects on the creation theory of painting and writing and its effects on the appreciation theory of art. This paper can be divided into four parts.The first part analyses the appearance of the painting poetry from two perspectives. One is the origins of its history and culture, the other is the requirement of art development. Western esthetics emphasizes the difference between picture and poetry, while the Chinese one focuses on the similarities. Chinese painting is simple but implicative, which leaves poets huge space of imagination and inspiration. The poets' inclination of emotion gives rise to the painting poetry.The second part classifies the painting poetry in Tang and Song dynasties in terms of the contents—human, trees, flowers, birds, animals, mountains and rivers. It also gives a brief introduction respectively. This part probes into the aesthetic function of painting poetry in the way of its writing techniques, like the combination of dream and reality, action and inaction, time and space, as well as the mixture of sound, color, smell and feeling.The third part discusses the effects what the painting poetry gives on the artistic conception of poems and the old Chinese painting. The painting is the expansion of the poetry, that's why the "picture in poem" builds; What's more, in this integrated painting-poetry conception, the poetry levels up the aesthetics of the painting, also influences its contents and patterns, so the "poem in picture" promotes. The last part makes an analysis of the influence in Chinese painting and aesthetic theory, which brought by the painting poetry in Tang and Song dynasties. After discussing the painters' minds in their working, this part fulfills the aesthetic theory according to aestheticians' mood and style. In the end, it makes a conclusion that the painting poetry in Tang and Song dynasties rich and perfect the theory of the conception of Chinese art.
