Ancient Chinese Architecture establishes a separate style in the world with characteristic wooden structure, diverse rooftop, gorgeous color decoration and splendid frescoes which acquire high artistic achievement in architecture history and also provide scientific research value nowadays. Due to natural and anthropogenic factors, numerous ancient architectures of great value have vanished from the earth, which is extremely regretful. Consequently, the surviving ancient architectures which have experienced vicissitude of history are so greatly precious that we ought to take any measures necessary to protect them. Besides, we should also realize the important value contained in those architectures, and make it flowing down for long ages. Especially, it is urgent and necessary to protect the ruins of ancient architectures to reveal their worth of historical research in Xi'an city which has a history of thousands of years and masses of historic sites. This thesis takes Wolong temple and Dongyue temple as examples to investigate the layout of Wolong temple and errors of its construction details. Furthermore, protection of fresco in Dongyue temple is also discussed in this thesis.This thesis is comprised of two parts. In the first part, the thesis firstly summarizes the general layout structure of Buddhist temple. Then the thesis specifically analyzes the layout structure and construction details of Zen Buddhist temple which is one of Chinese Buddhism sects. Base on discussion above, the thesis next investigates Wolong temple, a Zen Buddhist temple built at emperor command in separate section. In detail, this section firstly introduces the historical variation of Wolong temple's name and its rebuilding during past dynasties, and also outlines the construction style of surviving Buddhist temples. Then the section researches the construction layout of Wolong temple and analyzes the position and function of each temple hall. Taking Guangji temple in Beijing, the representative of Buddhist temple built at emperor command as reference and comparing it with plane layout and construction details of Wolong temple, the section finally shows the improperness and irrationality of Wolong temple, and offers the proposal of modification which can be referenced in later restoration work. In the second part, the thesis firstly compares various styles of Chinese fresco in different historical period and concludes their general features and common characteristics. Then the thesis investigates the history and damage of existing frescoes in Dongyue temple main hall to find the problems of fresco protection. Finally, illustrated with restoration main principle and technology of Italian frescoes, the thesis summarizes the scheme of protection and restoration of frescoes in Dongyue temple main hall.
