For the protection of cultural relics in China, Currently we still do not have a scientific and tried-and-true standard for the detection and analysis of the mortar used in ancient architecture.The mortar is truly irreplaceable as the one of the most basic support material of anchient architecture. Thus it becomes a very important factor for the research, protection, and renovation of anchient architecture.To detect and analysis the state, constituents, structure and characteristics of mortar is a fundemantal work going through the whole process of protection and renovation, which includes understanding the state of preservation, studying the mechanism of common damages, duplicating the repair materials, selecting the repairing approaches, and evaluating the repairing effects. Lacking for a scientific standard to help guide such work, the analysis of mortor is yet not comphehensive, scientific, professional and careful enough to make for the protection and renovation. A standard on the analysis of mortar of anchient architecture is consequently of practical significance. This paper is dedicated to study the significative state parameters and property indices of mortar of anchient architecture; to sum up the state-of-the-art and most commonly used methods by collecting various cases and reviewing the relevant references in view of its particularity; to check and optimize all the available means of the in-situ measurement and laboratory analysis; and finally completed the standard (draft) for mortar analysis of ancient architecture on the basis of essential elements, principles and steps of a typical standard or specification.The completed standard (draft) shall be the nation’s first one on the detection and analysis of anchient architecture materials. It not only follows the principles of cultural relics protection, but also sum up those state-of-the-art and most-commonly-used means in practice and provide the relevant validation and optimization. Last but not least, it follows the common rules of typical industrial criteria. It thus gives reference to the practical application of protection and renovation of anchient architecture.
