In 1980s, there appears a new life in Chinese modern literary world, vanguard literature, which brings an exuberant atmosphere. Vanguard literature holds an idea of revolution to draw social attentions, and the efforts in the strategies of story narration make profound influences in Chinese modern literature. To some extent, the development of vanguard literature, especially the maturity and perfection of narration skills, has some thing to do with post-western modern literature. What's more, it is obvious that it is fully under the influence of Jorge Luis Borges who's a master in post-western modern literature. The moment when vanguard literature came into the literary world, there's a heated topic about it. This paper, in an attitude of object and fairness, aims to study the development of vanguard literature from the perspective of narratology, and then makes a fair evaluation to vanguard literature's narration values. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part makes a general conclusion of vanguard literature narration from perspectives of the emerging of vanguard literature and its development. Real vanguard is a spirit which does not coincide with tradition and the main stream. Vanguard novelists, on the shoulders of predecessors, make an overall and meaningful revolution on narration strategies to express their deep disagreement on the traditional realistic skills. The emerging of vanguard literature is a coefficient result of the combination of Chinese culture and western culture. Moreover, it is a necessity of the Chinese modern literature development with its own periodic features. The second part mainly discusses the relationship between vanguard literature and post-western modern literature. Chinese literature in 1980s possesses typically western characteristics which are learnt in china, for the reason that post-western modern literature, especially the works of Borges, played an important role in the development of Chinese modern vanguard literature which directively borrowed the artistic techniques of Borges. The third part tries to analyze the maturity and perfection of narration skills of vanguard literature from the perspective of narratology. And four aspects are included: structure, viewpoint and narrator, time and language. Finally, vanguard novelists found a direction on the road of vanguard literature, and then made tremendous progress. The last part, in a whole, discusses values and criticism of vanguard narration, points out its influence and shortage, and analyzes reasons of its extinction, hoping that the following writers can learn something from it. Through the analysis, this paper tries to give a fair evaluation to merits and shortcomings of narrative strategies of Chinese modern literature.
