This thesis discusses Liu Shipei and Zhang Taiyan's acceptances and interpretations of theories of the western origin of Chinese and how they produce impacts on Liu and Zhang's thoughts, which I intend to draw from their own studies and thoughts rather than external influences, for instance, the nationalism. This thesis holds an intellectual approach to investigate Liu and Zhang, and the whole body of it has three chapters.Chapter 1 is a review of the history of the related researches.Chapter 2 itself is divided again into three parts, which are a brief introduction of Lacouperie's theory about the western origin of Chinese civilization and Liu's theory about it, mainly concerning how this theory plays an essential role in Liu's transition from a nationalist to an anarchist, and Zhang's theory, with a great interest in Zhang's practice to integrate the comparative linguistic into traditional Chinese philology as well as to what extend this theory changes his viewpoint of nationalism. To begin with the the latest studies, the last chapter attempts to explain the validity of Liu anf Zhang's theories, especially the information they dig out from the Chinese historical records showing a traceable great migration of people.
