Satoshi Kon is an important representative personage in contemporary Japanese animated films creation group. He is the fourth one who gets a worldwide fame as a Japanese animation artist after Hayao Miyazaki Katsuhiro Otomo and Mamoru Oshii. Millennium Actress, Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers are his tour de forces which are "worshipped" and "reproduced" by numerous international famous directors, which indirectly reflects artisitic status and artistic attainment of his works. Most importantly, he subverts traditional classic creation mode in Japanese animation creation, giving his works unique charms. Recently study on Satoshi Kon animation is a relatively new field. Few researchers pay attention to this unique animation director who has pioneering spirit. Present research achievements available are mostly restricted to think on his single works. a systematic discussion has not been found until now which brings about innovations and difficulties to this thesis.This thesis starts from influencing factors of Satoshi Kon's animation creation, lays stress on themes and narrative technique in his films, simply summarizes his narrative characteristics and audio-visual techniques, which makes a concrete and tridimensional probe into his animations. There are two factors which have great impact on his animations including personal factors and social factors. In terms of personal factors, his interest in films makes great contributions to his achievements, his practice on writing movie reviews and supervising endows his animations consistent Japanese traditional style. In the respect of social factors, native culture in Japan has an great impact on his creation. The support of government on animation and positive animation market create a golden opportunity for him to show his personal style; meanwhile his exploration is given great admission and encouragement. Human beings, science and technology, society get involved into his animations. Profound philosophy in his animations reflects his distinctive world view. As regards artistic expression, he produces animations from the point of view which is against human standard, which reflects in the following aspects:he utilizes numerous symbols, seeks the conjunction point of "Live Motion" and "Animation Film", displays unconsciousness of human beings in his animation films initiatorily, which push animation film to a new height.Moreover, film language of Satoshi Kon is the focus of research in the thesis. In the first place, this thesis analyzes visual language in his animations. The characteristics of his visual language are reflected in three respects:First, his unique viewpoint, which includes omniscient viewpoint and common viewpoint; second, coherent transition, which focuses on natural convergence of motion pictures; third, the use of color, which pays attentions to portray psychology of characters. In the next place, this thesis make a analysis of visual language in Satoshi Kon's animations:first, the application of acoustics in his animations, which presents three-dimensional effect rather than single picture, meanwhile the screen is filled with boundless vitality and extended space; furthermore, the expressive function of art is delivered completely; second, the integration of rock and roll and electronica, which have an insight into the world acutely, standing for avant-garde, vanguard, rebellion, precisely corresponding to the thought he want to manifest in his animations, that is, criticism of social reality, the bitters of life, choice of freedom.Through the analysis above, the author deems that Satoshi Kon is a director of responsibility. His animations is full of consideration on human beings, science and technology, society. this kind of consideration is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and society. Simultaneously, he is a personalized director whose animations is rife with personalized color. It is hoped that the systematic study on Satoshi Kon's animations can provide an example for contemporary animation education.
