In 1973, a pair of intact flutes made of bamboo was found in the number one tomb of Mawangdui Han Dynasty tomb in Hunan Province. These flutes are the earliest ones found in our country (Zenhou Yi tomb was found in 1978) and their excavation has a great influence on the research of the form, origin and evolution of Chinese bamboo flutes (for example, the horizontal flutes).Since 1980s, many scholars began to study in this field and they came to the conclusion that this instrument should be called"Zhu", because the symbol"篴"was found on the excavation. As a result, the scholars easily denied the vertical playing of it which was accepted for thousands of years. On the principle of seeking truth from facts, the author consulted a lot of literatures and data about the excavation. However, no such a symbol"篴"was found and the name of it has to be reconsidered. Based on this, this paper which is divided into three parts, attempts to study the name of the flutes found in Mawangdui Han Dynasty tomb. The first chapter questions the naming of the horizontal playing flutes"篴"found in Mawangdui Han Dynasty tomb and shows that there is no such a symbol"篴"on the excavations; it concludes that naming the flutes as"篴"is false. Chapter two questions the name of"Di". Based on the analyzed data, it got the conclusion that many scholars called Mawangdui flutes as"Di"or Han"horizontal Di"because they have been influenced by the modern horizontal Di. However, the so called"Di"in Han is a kind of vertical playing instrument, and as a result it cannot be called as"Di". Chapter three studies the name of"篪". According to the records about"篪"in ancient literatures, it found that the"篪"in Western Zhou is a common name and originator for the horizontal flutes. Compared with the horizontal playing instruments which are called Chi in Zenhou Yi tomb, it is found that the instruments found in Mawangdui Han Dynasty tomb and Zenhou Yi tomb belong to the same instrument Chi, which is considered to be the ancestor of Chinese horizontal playing flutes.
