As for the semantic change of Chinese, the study of the semantic change is one of the most important key problems. First, we sum up the main points in these years. These achievements include: a psychological approach, a rhetoric aproach, a logical approach, a historical approach. Then we bring forward a new one: a context approach to the causes and principles of the semantic change. This is because the context is the source of the word meanings. The method that we use is the fixed quantitative and qualitative analysis. In this thesis, through the study of the examples in the dictionary of Xian dai han yu ci dian and some ones in the other languages (such as English) ,we make the explaination of the causes of the semantic change, which are internal context, linguistic context and social context. Furthermore, we make convincing expositions about the principles of the semantic change. These princi pies consist of three aspects: first , external descriptions of re~1ity become internal descriptions of perceptions and evaluations; second, external and internal descriptions become textual meanings; third, meanings become increasingly based on the social situation. Finally ,one point should be added as follows: In a course of the semantic change. there is a interaction among the three causes, where one is primary and the other is seconday, or early and late. All of the diachronic changes are almost the solidification of the synchronic variations.
