I study on the beginning patterns of Zhanghui novels of Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty from three aspects: how to classify them; their significant functions in structure and the implied meaning of the novels; the courses of the formation of these beginning patterns. In the first part, I describe the characteristics of these patterns and the process of their evolution by classifying the beginning of Zhanghui novels into three patterns. These demonstrate that the ability of controling the whole novel of the Zhanghui novelists have increased gradually and that novelists began to write novels consciously. The beginning is a relatively independent level in the novel It is the whole framework of the structure of the novel and demonstrates the structure thought of the novelist. And it also demonstrates the implied meaning of the novel. The third part study on how these patterns were formed. The vvrittmg style of short stones , the preface of poems andthe Bagu articles all influenced the creation of novels. Besides, individual habit and experiences of novelist have effects on how they begin to narrate the story. At the end of the ninteenth century, foreign novels began to be translated into Chinese, Zhanghui novels lost the cultural background and began to disappear.
