Because of changes in the existential conditions in his adolescence, LuXungradually became a man who was concerned with the existence of the individual and thewhole nation alike. The existential evolution theory was his main thought then. As litera-ture has the function to promote the existential evolution, LuXun decided to abandon thecourse of medical science and pursue literature instead. His literary view is mastering thepresent and conducting the existence. His traslation of foreign novel is to stimulate the ex-istential consciousness of the Chinese peple. Ture - to - life description in his novel showedthe existential style of the contemporary Chinese life, and the national trait was exposed. Thus, the national trait is the key to understand LuXun's novel. The aesthetic thought inLuXun's novel is the double tragedy of the national trait, one of which is the tragedy ofthe unconscious existence of most Chinese and the other tragedy is the struggle to reformthe national trait and the predicament that haunted a few conscious Chinese. The tragedyof LuXun's novel eliminated the distance between the literature and the existence. Hestrongly objected to the literary view of "conceal and cheat"because this art insulated theexistence from the literature. The aim of LuXun's novel is to accelarate the evolution ofChinese existence. Thus, his nove1 is a medium of his thought in the existential evolution.
