Thomas Hardy(1840-1928)is a world-famous British realist writer.He occupies an important position in the history of world literature for his excellent literary works.The Mayor of Casterbridge takes the city of Casterbridge in the 1830 s as the background.It tells about the harm of traditional patriarchal system to human beings in the process of industrial revolution,and the great damage of modern industrial civilization to the natural and social ecological environment.This paper will interpret the tragic theme of The Mayor of Casterbridge from the perspective of natural ecological tragedy and social ecological tragedy,and explore the causes of the tragedy and the ways to improve it.This paper is divided into three parts: introduction,text and conclusion.The text is divided into three chapters.The introduction consists of three parts: the life and creation of Hardy,the research status of Hardy at home and abroad,and the research status of The Mayor of Casterbridge at home and abroad.The first chapter analyzes the natural ecological tragedy in The Mayor of Casterbridge from three aspects: the deterioration of natural environment,the destruction of urban environment and the introduction of science and technology.The second chapter analyzes the social ecological tragedy in The Mayor of Casterbridge from four aspects: family tragedy,system tragedy,interpersonal tragedy and social tragedy.The third chapter analyzes the causes of the tragedy of The Mayor of Casterbridge and the measures to deal with it from two aspects: the causes of the tragedy and his theory of evolution to goodness.Under the influence of the tragic view of fate in ancient Greece,the tragic view of Shakespeare’s character,social reality and local complex,Hardy created The Mayor of Casterbridge and put forward the theory of evolution to goodness.Elizabeth is the image of his evolution for good in The Mayor of Casterbridge.Conclusion: as a responsible realist writer,Hardy has been observing the social reality and paying attention to the development of human society,and actively exploring the road to evolution.
