This paper aims at probing into the origin and development of the theory of analytic and synthetic propositions of Logical Empiricism. So as to establish its proper place in west philosophy history and to correct the false views caused by emphasizing partial situations, meanwhile to lay stress on the distinctive feature that Logical Empiricism blends well with analytic philosophy and scientific philosophy. It mainly consists of three parts. Part one briefly deals with the historical background of the theory, that is, modem logic applying to philosophy and the differences and similarities between science and metaphysics. Part two narrates and comments the history of the system of analytic and synthetic propositions. Logical Empiricism started with rejecting Kant抯 views and constructed its own system of analytic and synthetic propositions after over ten years?hard work. Since then, Quine 憇 criticism on analytic concepts forced Logical Empiricism to change the absolute division of the system into a relative one, which made the system more complete. The last part chiefly illustrates the difficulties, which Logical Empiricism encountered when explaining why analytic and synthetic propositions excluded metaphysics. Then it briefly mentions that because of science need for metaphysics, Logical Empiricism stopped its previous work and concentrated on studying how metaphysics was good to science. Therefore the historical mission of analytic and synthetic propositions came to an end.
