Astract The first climax of Chinese going abroad in the Chinese history appeared in the later period of Ming Dynasty. Under the circumstances, Overseas Chinese society in Nanyang began to take shape. There were a number of factors which led to this climax, apart from the burden of population on land. The rapid development of trade between China and Nanyang constituted the major force. After the sea bans were lifted by the end of Ming Dynasty, the major form of trade between China and Nanyang areas was private overseas trade instead of tribute trade. The transformation of the form of trade as well as social and economic development in China, etc, contributed to the prosperity of the development of private overseas trade. The trade between China and Nanyang areas took place under a specific social and economic environment and was characterized by the following features: trade conducted by peaceful means with the purpose of mutual benefit, trade that became part of world trade, etc. Overseas Chinese played a very important role in the trade between China and Nanyang areas. They were mainly engaged in economic activities, such as trade, established a sales network for commodities in Nanyang from China and served as an intermediary between, Chinese merchants, the aborigines in Nanyang and European colonists. The economic activities of Overseas Chinese in Nanyang, to some extent, stimulated the development of commodity economy in the southern and eastern coastal areas of China and made great contribution to the economic and cultural prosperity of Nanyang,...
