Under such social background, he emphasized the social value of poems; what's more, he regarded the "true feeling"as the poetic ontology from the aesthetic perspective, and he also improved the theory on poetic style, state, transition and appreciation. This essay breaks down into two parts, including introduction and body. The introduction gives a brief account on Xu's life story, his poetic theories, social and cultural background and the present study on him. Chapter Ⅰ deals with the poetic ontology. Xu regarded "true feeling" as poetic ontology, which includes two connotations: the true of social ethics of Confucianism and the true of Taoism ideology on universe and nature Chapter Ⅱ elaborates on the social value of poems. It was of great significance to inherit Conficion tradition under such a special background in late Qing Danasty Chapter Ⅲ puts an analysis on poetic state. Xu inherited and developed Yan Yu's poetic theories, pointing out that the works featured in"ru shen"arethe literarycreation inthe stateof"ru shen"; moreover, he also holded on that "ru shen"comes from a poet's knowledge accumulation and his rich life experience. Chapter Ⅳ focus on the transition of poems. Xu insisted on the point that poems should be original on the basis of wide learning from rich poetic tradition and feeling of life experience. Chapter Ⅴ elaborates on poetic style. Xu developed Si Kongtu's poetic thought on Twenty-four styles of poems, and made thorough analysis on the role of individual talent, knowledge, boldness and insight in forming poetic style. Chapter Ⅵ is on poetic appreciation. By far, The study on Xu's poetic theory is rare in Chinese literature and aesthetic field. This essay makes an attempt to analyze on Xu's poetic theories.
