The aim of Foreign Language Teaching is to develop students' communicative competence, so all teaching activities should center around this principle. But the problem is that generally speaking communicative competence in oral English is low in our country, which comes from underestimating of the training of students' communicative competence in college class. College English teaching has long been teacher-centered, ignoring the development of students' subjectivity. It thus comes to be a very significant research topic how to avoid cramming method in teaching, how to inspire students' initiative to study actively and how to arrange teaching activities according to student-oriented principle, to improve their communicative competence in oral English.Comparing with the conventional way of giving lessons to the whole class by the teacher, group activities as an organizational make up in teaching hold its advantageous position in enhancing students' association, developing students' communicative competence and in improving teaching quality effectively.This article exposes the function of group activities on students' communicative competence in oral English in the light of the actual condition of college English teaching. It elaborates the theoretical basis of application of group activities to English teaching from three aspects桺sychology, pedagogy and linguistics, and it also reveals its theoretical significance and practical value.To verify the hypothesis that group activities can improve students' communicative competence hi oral English, an investigation was made by observing the English class to which applied the method of group activities, and so was a questionnaire. The result is that group activities can effectively help to improve students' communicative competence in oral English.Finally, the problems emerged from the activities have been analyzed and appropriate measures have been provide.
