Oral communication is an important part of communication. The improvement of students' oral communicative competence will advocate the development of their comprehensive quality. According to the syllabus for English majors, students should pronounce accurately and have a natural tune. They can talk about current affairs with foreign guests as smoothly and appropriately as possible and express opinions systematically and consistently. However, the communicative competence of students in China is far from the demands of the English curriculum standards. They can not speak as native speakers and make a non-verbal communication.The author does a survey so as to get insight into the students'communicative competence and make a proposal of how to advance oral English teaching, taking sophomores majored in English as subjects. Interviewing, making the questionnaire together with observing is used to collect the data based on three theories covering communicative approach, input and output hypothesis. Some findings can be found in the following four points:(1) Subjects are lacking in the communication with target language; (2) They are deficient in self-confidence; (3) They have anxiety in the process of communication; (4) They can't use speaking strategies appropriately.This thesis is mainly divided into five parts. The first chapter states the significance and objectives of the research. The second chapter introduces the theories of this thesis. Chapter three is about the research design, including the methodology, objectives and subjects of the research, devices for data collection, and the description of the questionnaires, and the analysis of procedures of the research. Chapter four presents findings and the application of Communicative Approach. In chapter five, the limitations and recommendation for further study are presented.
